2022 Canine Unit Calendar

The CPS Canine Unit, in collaboration with the Calgary Police Youth Foundation, proudly presents the 2022 Canine Unit Calendar.

These dogs, alongside their handlers, put their lives on the line every day to keep Calgarians safe and truly are heroes to us all.

The 2022 K9 Heroes calendar is available in Calgary and surrounding areas in all Sobeys and Safeway stores for $15 starting September 27, 2021.

You can also order calendars ONLINE for $15 each (+$5 shipping) and all proceeds from the calendars support child and youth programming in Calgary that focuses on crime prevention, education and early intervention.

Fast Facts: Calgary Police Service Canine Unit

• In January 1959 Cst. Fred Moore brought forward the idea of a Canine Unit for the then Calgary Police Force. The idea was eventually approved by the Police Commission.
• A Hans Carrol became the first Canine Unit trainer.
• The unit had four members that began training with Police Service Dogs; Ember, Dante, Spook and Duke
• The four dog teams completed training during the summer of 1960 and began patrolling the streets of Calgary.


• In 1963 the Canine Unit expanded to seven dogs teams.
• The original Canine Unit kennel was at the formal Forest Lawn Dog Pound facility.
• In 1978, a new kennel facility and training field was building in NE Calgary, adjacent to the McCall Lake Golf Course.
• In 2010, the unit moved into a state of the art kennel facility at the CPS North Services Centre.
• The CPS Canine Unit have been the host agency for the Canadian Police Canine Association Championships in 1981, 1982 , 2000, and in 2016.


• In preparation for the 1988 Winter Olympic Games, the unit added Explosive Detection Dogs to its profile. Drug Detection Dogs and Cadaver Detection Dogs have since been added to the detection program.
• The unit has expanded to 15 Constables and 2 Sergeants.
• German Shepherds, Doberman Pincers, Malinois’, Retrievers, Labs and Dutch Shepherds have all been used as working dogs for the CPS Canine Unit
• The CPS Canine Unit have lost three Police Service Dogs in the live of duty; Pharoah in 1969, Sirk in 1989, and Gino in 2003
