Damn Strait is Scotty’s fifth straight Country Airplay #1. Jim Collins and Trent Tomlinson wrote Damn Strait for Scotty’s fifth LP Same Truck.

“My first country music concert was George Strait, and along with my love for Elvis Presley, he inspired me to become a country music singer myself. When I did American Idol, George called me and requested I sing his 1995 hit Check Yes or No, and I still sing it from time to time in concert. Now, having my fifth straight #1 on a song that pays tribute to George, while at the same time being a classic country heartbreaker such as he might have sung, is such a full-circle moment that means the world to me. Trent Tomlinson and Jim Collins wrote a clever song that reaches beyond name-dropping Strait hits to tell a meaningful story.”

Damn Strait is #3 in Canada on the Billboard Country Airplay chart.

“This song is such a great tribute to one of my musical heroes, George Strait, while also using his song titles in a clever way to tell such a heartbreaking story. I’ve loved it from the moment I first heard it. It is one of my favorite songs that I’ve recorded, and the fans love it in concert as well. You can feel the anticipation in the air as they get ready to sing along on the chorus.”

“I had an email from Kevin Herring at my label, and he said, Hey, take a listen to this song. It just came through for you, and I kind of had a little mini freak-out session because I’m a huge George Strait fan. I love the different tidbits in there of songs of his. It’s a classic country breakup song, but it’s also paying homage to George Strait throughout the song. It’s so cleverly written. If you’re a country fan, a George Strait fan, this song is so cool.”

Scotty and his wife Gabi are expecting their first child, and their due date is easy to remember: It’s Halloween.

“I was the only boy on both sides of my family, the last McCreery boy out there. Gabi’s from two sisters in her family, so I just figured it would be a girl. But we got a surprise of a boy.”
“I grew up playing sports, so getting to introduce him to baseball, which was my first love right there with music, and golf are just little things that will be great.”

The Damn Strait music video was directed by Jeff Ray and filmed at the historic Gruene Hall in New Braunfels, Texas, built-in 1878. A venue frequently played by George Strait early in his career before he signed a record deal.

“I knew I wanted to film it at a place that paid respect to both elements of the song. When my director Jeff Ray suggested Gruene Hall, where George performed regularly with his Ace in the Hole Band before becoming the legend that he is today, I knew that was the perfect location.”

Scotty celebrates his new #1 with a concert at Gruene Hall on September 23, 2022.

“You can feel the history and the music of country music’s past and present in every inch of that venue. I’ve wanted to visit Gruene Hall for a long time, and now that I have, I’m looking forward to eventually coming back there to do a show.”
