Eric Church Some Of It #1 on ACC with Kix Brooks

ACC with Kix Brooks is on CISN Country 103.9 Edmonton and Country 105 Calgary Saturday’s 8am-Noon.

Eric Church’s Some Of It is his 8th #1 on the Billboard Country Airplay chart followed by American Country Countdown.

“I went to my dad when I was 17 and said, I want to be a country music star. Which every dad loves to hear. And he said, I want you to go to college. So we had a discussion. And I’m pretty stubborn. I’m a lot like him. And he said, If you go to college and graduate, I’ll pay your first six months of rent in Nashville. So he bribed me.”

“I came to Nashville to be a songwriter; I never really came to town to be an artist. I didn’t know how to do it.” “But there were so many people in town that kept saying, We love this or that song, but it sounds like it’s his. When that started coming back time and time again, we started thinking, Maybe we’re going about this wrong. That’s when we started at least entertaining that I should be an artist.”

When Eric came to Nashville 17 years ago he answering phones on the Shop at Home Network’s graveyard shift. He got fired for talking a drunk guy out of buying 200 knives at 3 a.m.

Church: “Tell you what, man go to bed, and if you still want ’em in the morning, I’ll be here.” Drunk guy: “But they said there’s only three left!”

Eric Church wrote Some Of It with Jeff Hyde, Clint Daniels and Bobby Pinson. It’s the second single from Eric’s 6th LP Desperate Man.

“The key to songwriting is just to be able to observe, and put yourself in situations to be around people, and let those ideas come to you.”

Some Of It almost didn’t make the LP according to Eric.

“I was playing the album for a dear friend of ours and my wife was with me. This person loved the album, but my wife said, but let me play you what did not make it, and the first thing she played was Some Of It. It was always a favorite song of mine, and I listened to it that night and it is just… I am going to regret if I do not record this song. I called my manager that night and said, hey we have got to talk. The recording was done, the record was essentially done, but I said, I have got to do this, I have to add this song. Initially, all the stuff that I thought was going to be the pillars for this album just bombed. But I think it’s really interesting that the album took on an identity that allowed Some Of It to make it from where it started to where it is now, and it just fit in the dialogue. To me, it made the album. I loved the album before it was on there but it might be my favorite album now that it’s on there, so that’s the way I look at it.”

Reid Long directed Some Of It which continues the musician turned outlaw story line of Eric’s Desperate Man video.

Eric Church’s Double Down Tour continues this fall. Church plays two shows a week in one city on a Friday and Saturday night. Each gig of the two-night residency promises an opener free three hour show divided into two sets with a 20-minute intermission.

“Looking back on my career, some of the hardest times, eight people at a show, 12 people on a bus were some of the most fun.”

The Church Choir will sing with him in Calgary Sept 20 & 21 at the Scotiabank Saddledome. Eric prides himself on no two shows ever being the same.

“When we go out there, I want to be the act that, no matter who’s in that crowd, they’ve never seen a better act than me. I’m gonna empty the tank.”
“My favorite thing is to go out in the arenas, like, an hour before doors, and run the concourse. And you get that anticipation. You smell the popcorn. You see the people tapping the kegs. And nobody is in there yet but you, but you feel it. It’s my favorite thing on tour.”
